Chapter 2 of Pat Conroy's novel, "The Great Santini," opens with the Meecham family waiting for their father to return from a long deployment overseas. The movie includes the scene, too.
Pick out one difference between the movie version of the scene and the book version. Which do you prefer and why?
Here's mine: In the book, Mrs. Meecham has "dark, luxuriant red" hair "half covering her right eye." She's meant to seem sexy in the book. That doesn't come across nearly as well in the movie -- she doesn't even have red hair -- perhaps because the director needs to keep the focus on the colonel. But I liked the book's Mrs. Meecham better.

The first time I saw the plane it was on the ground. I don’t remember them showing it in the air at 2 o’clock.
ReplyDeleteIn the hand out it states"You read Dad`s letters?' Ben said, amazed. "MOm would kill you if she knew that." "It`s my duty to keep you informed. I will tell you one lewed, but fascinating piece of information. He refers to his penis as Mr. Cannon and her vagina as Miss Nancy. Isn`t that lovely? It made me want to puke."
ReplyDeleteI do not recall that part in the movie. ( maybe I jsut was not paying much attention) I liked the reading that was handed out better.
Along with what Brit. said i also noticed that they didn't show the plane in the air. It was already landed on the ground.
ReplyDeleteI like the reading because it always has more to it, but the reading made it seem like Ben was checkin his Mom out when he was walking back down the runway...so its a little odd at that point. Other than that I like it.
ReplyDeleteAs lame as it is they showed the plane in the air and I guess I can see why it would just take up space and what not so it works for the better.
ReplyDeleteI only saw one difference which is the same difference that everyone else saw which was that we saw the plane on the ground. Where in the story they talk about how they saw it flying in and everyone was excited.
ReplyDeleteOk now this sounds like a broken record player, but yeah the plane I noticed. As we all know it wasn't shown in the air, but was on the ground.
ReplyDeleteI would have to agree with everyone else about the plan.
ReplyDeleteI hate posting so late, everyone has the same idea.....darn !!!
ReplyDeleteDIDO - The plane was what I noticed too !!!
The only difference that I saw was the same thing that everyone else saw. Which was that the plane was already on the ground in the movie and in the story it was in the air.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Lindsey. By the time I get around to posting everyone has post about the one I was going to talk about. I was going to mention the thing about the plane too.
ReplyDeleteso yeah....the plane was my idea also.... but i dont remember a wind sock in the movie but it mentions it in the reading.
ReplyDeleteIn the reading the mother says to the children, "We'll all run to your father when he gets off the plane." In the movie she is very clear that she wants everyone to "walk" up to their father. Regardless of what she says in the movie, they run anyways. I enjoy the reading more - I feel it captures the humor better.
ReplyDeleteI never saw the plane in the air at 2 o'clock. The plane was on the ground for what i remember of seeing.
ReplyDeleteI dont remember Ben and Mary Anne talking about the letters there dad wrote to their mom. I like the movie better because I honestly would rather not here them talk about what there parents refer to each other.
ReplyDeletei also agree with the fact that the i never saw the plane in the air and i also do not remember ben and mary talking about the letters that their dad wrote to their mom.
ReplyDeleteThe thing that bothered me was that they were standing there waiting for him to come home. All of a sudden the plane magically appears and hes already unloading. the time frame in between landing a plane and unloading it was not thought through at all.
ReplyDeleteBen and mary-anne didnt talk about the lettes that their dad wrote there mom. Also i noticed the plane also
