A Letter to America

Read Margaret Atwood's letter (Presence, pp 510-512) and respond this way:
Angrily rebut her argument. Act incensed. Get on your high horse and blast away at her.
P.S. It doesn't matter whether you agree or disagree with her yourself; I just want you to take up the opposite side. Have fun.

  1. The letter talks about how Margaret not knowing what America was anymore. She describes how she thought she knew Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck I don't really understand why she thinks she remembers different things. A person should have the mind to remember what happened years and years ago.

  2. I disagree with some of Margaret Atwood’s opinions in her Letter to America. I think other country’s opinions of the United States are bias. Other countries judge us by what we can do for them. They all love us when we save them from hunger, slaughter, and contagious diseases. They respect us when we come in with our military and fight off the Germans, but where were they when we needed allies in the attack on Iraq? I think only Americans can judge Americans fairly. We need to keep the leaders of our country honest.

  3. Oooppss! I didn't remember it was supposed to be a angry response. Here goes....How dare she question the credibility of the United States? We may not always get it right but there is no better country in the world. I can’t believe she even had a second thought about it. The best part is she has her freedom to make these negative statements because she lives in this country she is belittling. Maybe she should do something about the things she doesn’t like in this country by running for office.

  4. The letter sounds like she has no idea what America is anymore.Alot of what Elaine said is what I would write. It sounds like she is very lonely or very depressed about something. Again SHe has her freedom which is alot more than what some other people have.

  5. I think that Atwood is just mad because no immigrants want to come to canada to work because they have no opportunities for them. She then bashes the people of new england and says how we need to keep to our own business. I think that she is just jealous because the people of new england make close connections to the people they live with and no one ever liked her.

  6. In the letter it sounds like a very depressed person that is writing down all her feeling and not thinking about the other side. Also it's almost like taking granteed of the situation, not giving much thought to but only negitity. That makes me a little angry America Is a good Country a lot better than most, and shes just putting this country down.

  7. I disagree with her letter. I think that For Americans we have accomplished so much from what we started out from. The judgmental opinions are far from what most people view it as. It just seems that she didnt show our "true colors".
