ReplyDeleteone of the reasons he lists for traveling abroad is to learn one more language then u came into college with.
ReplyDelete"that you should leave college with one more language than you entered with"
for example, im traveling to Guatemala in feb. to learn about their culture and how their education system works compared to America. im sure ill pick up some spanish and io will need to learn some before i go over there so i can better communicate with the kids.
If you could spend a semester or a year at a foreign university, where would you go and why?
i would go to France or Italy. i like both those places and have only been to Paris once. i have yet to go to Italy. the reason i would want to go over there to study is because its rich in culture and history. now im not a fan history but some of it is amazing. also i am going to college to become an Athletic trainer and if i could get hooked up with a semi pro soccer team from europe then my life would be set.
i have real opportunity to study abroad next year when i go to england. i am going to england to be one of my friends unoffical personal trainer and i would need to finish my schooling over in england. i guess that would count as studying abroad.
In K. Anthony Appiah’s piece called “Learn Statistics. Go Abroad.” He encouraged colleges to participate in a study abroad program to improve the general education they offer. To make students more well rounded in their knowledge. He would like to see a mandatory second language for every graduate.
ReplyDeleteI’m glad he doesn’t have a vote here at Lyndon. I am having a hard enough time remembering things in English without having to learn a whole new language.
If I had to go to school abroad I would probably choose an English speaking university in Paris. That is the only place I care about traveling to. There is so much history in Paris. There are all kinds of art museums to visit and of course there is nothing like French pastry.
not sure if it counts , but on the lecture notes you have two misspelled words-Bollywood/Hollywood and skillz/skills
ReplyDeleteSomebody already caught "skillz."
ReplyDeleteBollywood is an actual word, a nickname for India's film capital, Bombay.
A reason K. Anthony Appiah thinks studying outside the United States is important is because he feels so much more can be learned outside the classroom. He doesnt believe that much can be taught within 4 years of college.
ReplyDeleteIf I was going abroad I would choose to go to Malta. The climate is warm all year long and all classes are taught in english.
If I had to choose I would go somewhere in Italy or Greece. The landscape and architecture is so beautiful and rich in history. I just think it would be refreshing and relaxing to be in a new and almost laid back culture.
ReplyDelete"If you want to improve the general education you're offering, in short, encourage your students to try somebody else's."
Students need diversity and experience in other cultures to have a "well-rounded" education. I think it would be a great idea to make foreign languages a GEU, because we can't expect everyone to know english.
In K. Anthony Appiah’s piece called “Learn Statistics. Go Abroad.” He states that
ReplyDelete"Too many of our students haven't the faintest idea what life is like anywhere outside the class and the community—let alone the country—they grew up in."
He is saying that with just a general knowledge of the classroom and community it only gives you a basic understanding of those topics, but if you go out and explore, you will learn more.
If I were to go study abroad, I would have to chose somewhere like Figi where the climate is tropical.
Prague! When people don't understand you, they say "Yak?"
ReplyDeleteHe thinks learning outside of the United States is a lot more useful for learning new things. It is to diversify your knowledge.
ReplyDeleteIf I could and really wanted to. I might go to somewhere in Europe like Poland, France, England or even Spain. I really don't like the idea of studying abroad, but that is what I would do.
One of the reasons he encourages people to study abroad is because a lot of students have no knowledge of any place outside of where they grew up, or even outside the country for that fact.
ReplyDeleteIf I could go to any University outside of America it would definetly be Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland. I'm actually planning on enrolling there after my 2nd year. Not only have I always wanted to go to Ireland, the school has a strong medical program which is what my major is.
He thinks that study abroad would help gain more knowledge and understanding about other place's other than where you grew up.
ReplyDeleteIve always wanted to go to Italy, people always say what a beautiful place Italy is and i would love to get that experience someday. Also with all the building's and story's that Italy has to tell, it would be an amazing experience. I think that study abroad is a good idea, having people having a better understanding about other place's that your not familiar with.
If i could go anywhere in the world I would go to Australia. They have some of the most amazing architectures in the world and I would love to study them

ReplyDeleteI have wanted to travel to Australia all my life. I think that the accent that the people have there is very interesting to listen to. Also, I would really like to see a kangaroo.
The author says that a lot of the students haven't found out what life is outside of their own culture. Also the study of languages is brought up as one of the reasons to get out of the country.
ReplyDeleteIf i could go anywhere in the world to go to school, i'd choose to go to Iraq or any country around there because i'd like to see and observe what the american soldiers are going through. Anywhere out of the United States would be fine with me because i've never been outside of it before.
In the essay the writer talks about the education department and how a lot of students don't learn about regions outside their own country. Also most student haven't found out what or how other people live outside the culture. People don't even know what it is like to live out of there own communities.
ReplyDeleteIf i were to have an opportunity to study abroad for even just a semester i would like to go to Italy and Greece because of their fine architecture and landscape.
I would also like to study if Africa because their lack of heath care. Right now i am studying to become a nurse and i like being able to help people and make a difference and there lives. In Africa i could make a huge different in many lives. An it could also make me a better nurse and more appreciative of what i have now, here in the united states. But now importantly Newport, Vermont.
One of the reasons why he decides to study outside the united states is he believes that you can learn more experiencing first hand and you get the full experience. other than getting lectured in a class room about it.
