For Thursday, March 19: "Cyclops"

You've heard the warnings before: "Bundle up or you'll catch your death of cold." "Put that down before you poke out your eye." After reading "Cyclops" by David Sedaris (the handout in the holder on my office door), tell us an oddball warning you've heard an adult tell a child.
My favorite is one my wife used to tell our children when they pouted: "If a cold wind blows, your face will freeze like that." They actually believed it until they were older.

  1. When I was a little girl, I used to play in the dirt in our yard. I always managed to get some in my mouth and went crying to my mom for help. She would just say to me, "Oh well, everyone has to eat a peck of dirt before they die."

  2. When my kids were younger to get them up early for school I use to tell them the early bird catches the worm. When they were old enough to go fishing they would wake me up before the birds and tell me come on mom the early bird catches the worm. Great memories.

  3. I remember when my sister and i were around 3 and 4 my mother told us to never swallow bubble gum or else it would get stuck in your stomach; and you would have a big ball of gum inside you. Also that the gum would clog up your stomach so you would get really sick.

  5. I could not think of one that my parents use to tell me. So i decide to ask my roommate if his parents ever use to one of those funny warning phrases when he was younger. He told that his mom use to tell him " Little boys who play with matches wet the bed". This is one that i have never heard.

  6. My parents actually said once the following and I quote, "If you yank that lobstah off the table you will not get seafood every again." This is because we were having lobstah that night and I think I was about 10 years old. My parents sometimes are nut cases when it comes to seafood. I never did yank it off the table and that is why I live by seafood. The only thing is that I haven't had lobstah since last summer. SO I CAN'T WAIT!!!

  7. In the movie A Christmas Story there is one about the bb gun. The quote is "you'll shoot your eye out" referring to the son getting a red rider bb gun. I never thought it was true because I was just a little kid when I started watching the movie. When I got older I started to undertstand it more.

  8. My parents never really said anything too out of the ordinary to me. The only one I can remember is when I would be making a goofey face and my mother would say, "If you do that too much you'll face will stick like that." I kind of believed her then, and even though I'm older now, I think I'm more scared now then when I was a child of my face getting stuck.

  9. My parents aways told me that if i went to far out in the water while swimming in the lake, big fish were going to take me away. That absolutly scared me so now even to this day i cant go out to far in the water because i think of that and have a fear of fish, it's horrible even tho i know it not true
